Colombia has been elected to a temporary seat on the United Nations (UN) Security Council for the period spanning January 2026 to December 2027.The election took place at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, June 3, where Colombia was chosen alongside Liberia, Bahrain, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Latvia.

Colombian Foreign Minister Laura Sarabia celebrated the election on X, stating it was “recognition of Colombia’s diplomatic leadership and the work of President Gustavo Petro in strengthening our foreign policy.”

The nation’s campaign emphasized its “Experience Constructing Peace,” a reference to the 2016 peace agreement with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). The bid received support from 180 countries, with eight abstentions.

In February, the country abstained from a UN resolution demanding russia’s withdrawal from Ukraine. President Petro has also been a vocal critic of Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Colombia will join Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia, who were elected the previous year, and also the five permanent members: China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. the non-permanent seats are divided into regional groups: Africa and Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Western Europe and other states.

This will be Colombia’s eighth time serving on the security council, with previous terms in 1947, 1953, 1957, 1969, 1989, 2001, and 2011.
