Colombia Reaffirms commitment to Peace Agreement at UN Security Council

Colombia’s Ongoing Pursuit of Peace: A Renewed Pledge to the UN

Foreign Minister Laura Sarabia addressed the United Nations Security Council, reinforcing the Colombian government’s dedication to fully implementing the 2016 Peace agreement. This commitment comes amidst both important progress and persistent challenges in establishing a lasting and equitable peace, notably in regions most affected by decades of conflict.

Progress and Persistent Challenges in Peace Implementation

During her address, Minister Sarabia acknowledged the international community’s crucial support, specifically highlighting the role of the United Nations Verification Mission in Colombia, led by Carlos Ruiz Massieu, and the Security Council’s unwavering backing over the past eight years. This support, she emphasized, has been instrumental in maintaining the agreement’s core principles and advancing vital projects aimed at assisting the conflict’s most vulnerable victims.

Sarabia presented key figures illustrating the progress made under President Gustavo Petro’s administration. These include the allocation of $2.4 billion USD for municipalities within the Development Programs with Territorial Focus (PDET), the updating of cadastral information for 9.6 million hectares, the awarding of over 133,000 hectares to landless peasants, and the active participation of more than 12,000 signatories in the reincorporation process. These figures demonstrate a tangible effort to address the root causes of the conflict and promote rural development.

Despite these advancements, significant hurdles remain. Regions like Catatumbo,Nariño,and the Micay Canyon, while showing positive results from implementation efforts, continue to grapple with threats of violence and displacement. These areas require sustained attention and resources to consolidate peace gains.

A Call for Continued International Support

Minister Sarabia urged the international community to maintain its support, particularly in regions facing ongoing instability. She emphasized that fulfilling the Peace Agreement is not merely a symbolic gesture but a state obligation supported by its citizens. The government views the peace process as a fundamental duty to its people, especially those who have suffered the most.

A Generation’s Hope for a Peaceful Future

Sarabia articulated the aspirations of a generation persistent to break the cycle of violence. A generation speaks to them that inherited from their parents and grandparents a country in conflict, but does not want to give the same to their children. A generation that still dreams, which believes that a Colombia in peace is possible, she stated, conveying a powerful message of hope and resilience.

Colombia’s Commitment: A Legacy of Peace

In her concluding remarks, Minister Sarabia affirmed that Colombia’s presence at the UN was not to seek leniency but to reaffirm its unwavering commitment to peace. With the support of this community,we will turn peace into a legacy, not a pending promise, she declared, underscoring the nation’s determination to build a lasting and just society.
