Filtered coffee might potentially be preferable. “Unfiltered coffee, such as espresso or French press, contains higher levels of cafestol and kahweol, which are compounds that may raise cholesterol and potentially blood pressure,” explains Cheng-Han Chen, MD.
Additionally, the amount of caffeine in different types of coffee can vary. A cup of brewed coffee typically contains more caffeine than a shot of espresso,but this can depend on the specific brand and preparation method.
Tips for Monitoring Blood Pressure at Home
The American Heart Association (AHA) suggests these steps for accurate home blood pressure readings:
- Remove clothing from the arm used for measurement.
- Sit still for at least five minutes before the reading (no talking or phone use).
- Sit with back straight and supported,feet on the floor.
- Support your arm on a flat surface.
- Position the cuff’s middle on your upper arm at heart level.
