Coco Gauff Suffers Early Exit at german Open After French Open Victory

By Anya Sharma | BERLIN – 2025/06/19 21:52:25

world No. 2 Coco Gauff experienced a setback at the German Open, losing in the second round to Xinyu Wang after her recent French Open title. The defeat delays a potential rematch with Aryna Sabalenka.

in her first match since winning at Roland-Garros on June 7, Gauff was defeated by China’s Xinyu Wang with a score of 6-3, 6-3 on Thursday. Wang, ranked No. 49 in the world, rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the second set to secure her place in the quarterfinals in Berlin.

This victory marks the third top-10 win for Wang, who previously upset Jessica Pegula at Wimbledon last season. “After I won the first set, I told myself, ‘Let’s take a minute and enjoy this… I won the first set against the French Open champion,'” Wang said in her post-match interview, per Olympics.com’s Nick McCarvel.
