“For those wondering: Oregon Inlet is in Nags Head, north Carolina. This footage is of a training evolution on our 47 foot motor lifeboat in the surf zone. Crews must “square up” to waves of this caliber, as striking them anywhere but the bow could knock down or roll over the vessel. We train in these conditions as mayday calls don’t only come in when the water is calm.”
The Coast Guard boat confronts waves estimated to be in the 20-foot range,battling through them in a scene reminiscent of The Perfect storm.
The exercise was a training session to prepare the crew for severe conditions. This specialized training is for Coast Guard “surfmen.” Only about 130 of the approximately 40,000 members of the Coast Guard nationwide are active duty surfmen.
