Coach Abuse: Fast Exit From New Club

Coach Michael Jolley lasted just two days as coach of Bury, an eighth-tier club in England, after pressure from fans, unhappy with his appointment. These are not negative results, but rather a criminal case in your private life.

Jolley, 48, pleaded guilty in 2009 to having sexual relations with a 15-year-old girl. He was given a 12-month suspended sentence and placed on the UK Sex Offenders Register for a year.

His appointment on Friday sparked criticism on social media and fans chanted and whistled during Saturday’s home game against Mossley, which they won 2-1.

Jolley defended that the young woman told him she was 19 years old and, recalling the case, claimed that subsequent investigations concluded that he was “deceived” and did not act “maliciously”, having always revealed the case to the various clubs he visited in the meantime. Since the court case, Jolley has worked for seven clubs, all professional football.

Still, he couldn’t handle the pressure from Bury fans and ended up leaving.

In a statement released on Sunday, Bury “recognizes the strength of the feelings expressed in recent days by fans, staff, partners and players, as well as the very real impact that the board’s decision to appoint Michael has had on those connected to the club.”

The statement also included a statement from Jolley: “I do not wish my presence to impede the management from fulfilling its mission of returning the club to its rightful place.”
