Empty Seats plague Club World Cup Opening Round in the US

Low attendance figures mar the start of the Club World cup in the United States, raising concerns ahead of the upcoming World Cup.

The opening round of the Club World Cup group matches in the UNITED STATES has seen a significant number of empty seats. More than 423,004 seats where unoccupied during the games.

Stadiums were only 56.8% full, with a total of 556,369 spectators attending the matches.

Nine stadiums, with a combined capacity of 979,373, hosted the first 16 matches of the tournament.

The expanded tournament is being viewed as a trial run for the international men’s World Cup next summer, which will be co-hosted by the USA, CANADA and MEXICO.

Attendance figures reveal that half of the 16 matches played so far had attendance rates below 50% of the stadium capacity.

The match with the lowest attendance was the game between South Africa’s MAMELODI SUNDOWNS and South Korean side ULSAN HD, which took place at INTER & CO STADIUM in FLORIDA, with only 3,412 spectators.
