Clot-Busting Medications Show Significant Improvement in Stroke Recovery
Researchers from Zhejiang University in China have made a significant breakthrough in stroke treatment. Their study, presented at the American Stroke Association’s recent International Stroke Conference 2025 in Los Angeles, US, revealed that clot-dissolving medication—alteplase—can enhance stroke patients’ recovery by more than 50%.
Extended Treatment Window for Alteplase
The study indicates that alteplase is effective when administered up to 24 hours after the onset of an ischemic stroke. Traditionally, the golden hour for stroke treatment is the first 60 minutes, while the existing maximum window for alteplase use is within 4.5 hours for some patients. This extended timeframe offers a more accessible treatment window for many patients.
Study Details and Results
The research was conducted on 372 stroke patients who experienced symptoms between 4.5 to 24 hours prior to treatment. Participants were randomly divided into two groups: one group received alteplase, while the other received standard stroke care, including antiplatelet therapy.
The results were promising. Among those treated with alteplase, approximately 40% showed minimal to no disability after 90 days. In contrast, only 26% of patients in the standard care group achieved similar outcomes. The study demonstrated a 54% higher likelihood of functional recovery for those given alteplase.
Managing the Risk of Complications
While the findings are encouraging, the study did identify an increased risk of brain bleeding among patients receiving alteplase. Specifically, the incidence was 3.8%, compared to 0.5% in the standard care group. However, the researchers assert that this risk is manageable.
Future Research and Implications
Professor Min Lou from the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University’s School of Medicine emphasized the need for further research. He suggests that the efficacy and safety of alteplase should be evaluated across different populations and healthcare settings to better understand its impact.
The potential of this research could transform stroke treatment globally, offering hope to millions of patients who may currently be outside the traditional treatment window.
Conclusion
This study represents a significant stride in the medical community’s efforts to improve stroke outcomes. By extending the window for alteplase treatment, doctors can offer a higher chance of recovery to a broader range of patients.
The findings urge continued research to ensure the safe and effective application of this treatment across diverse populations.
