Climate Ideas: Josefstadt & Penzing – 900+ Suggestions

by Archynetys News Desk

The climate team once again shows how much creative potential there is in Vienna: around 900 ideas have been submitted for Josefstadt and Penzing in the past few weeks. The next phase will start soon: In November, all ideas will be publicly exhibited and the Viennese can work on implementation together with experts.

VIENNA/PENZING/JOSEFSTADT. Climate protection often begins in your own neighborhood, as the Vienna climate team proves. In Penzing and Josefstadt, hundreds of people took part with their suggestions on how Vienna can become more sustainable, greener and more livable. “The strong participation shows how much people care about their environment,” says climate councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky (SPÖ).

In the climate team’s ideas phase, the Viennese were invited to submit their suggestions for more sustainability. A total of 900 ideas reached the city. They range from innovative energy projects to play streets and new forms of togetherness.

“Ideal platform”

Over 220 ideas were submitted in Josefstadt. District leader Martin Fabisch (Greens) is enthusiastic: “The commitment of the people of Josefstadt proves that climate protection is no longer a niche topic. I look forward to seeing how the ideas develop further in the coming months.”

Penzing was also active: District leader Michaela Schüchner (SPÖ) emphasized how important dialogue with the population is. “The Vienna climate team offers the ideal platform to discuss future issues together. The people of Penzing have put forward many creative and practical suggestions.”

From climate team cafés at the sausage stand to workshops for children and meetings in “pensioners’ clubs” – in the ideas phase, the exchange was deliberately designed to be low-threshold so that all generations could have a say.

Second phase starts

The second phase will start in November: the suggestions will be presented and further developed in public idea exhibitions and workshops. There will be an exhibition in Josefstadt from November 11th to 13th as well as a workshop on November 12th from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the WienXtra games box (Albertgasse 37). In Penzing they also go into the second round. The exhibition will be held from November 18th to 20th in the district council’s ballroom (Hütteldorfer Straße 188). The workshop will take place again on November 19th, from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Online registration at ticket.wien.gv.at/M20/ideenwerkstatt14. There, anyone interested – even those who haven’t submitted an idea – can join in the discussion, pool suggestions and think further together. Experts then check which projects can be implemented.

Ideas become projects

In spring 2026, the best ideas will be further developed into concrete project designs. A citizen jury, which is randomly drawn, then selects which projects will be implemented. These should then become reality within three years.

Since the start of the Vienna climate team, over 4,000 ideas have been submitted and 75 projects have been implemented in nine districts – including facade greening, nature trails and the redesign of markets and squares.
