Clarity, Freedom & Joy: Find Your Path

by drbyos

What importance does clarity have for volunteers?

Clarity is key. When tasks are recorded in writing, orientation and security arise. It also becomes clear which areas are taken over by whom. This creates recognition and prevents misunderstandings. By the way, it is just as important to name the non-tasks, as this takes a lot of pressure off.
Volunteers want to know what contribution they should make and how much time they should invest. This is particularly important when recruiting new volunteers.

At the same time, volunteers should have freedom to make decisions – this strengthens motivation, creativity and appreciation. In keeping with the vision of the future of the Catholic Church of Styria, the goal is to promote charisma-oriented engagement: people should contribute their talents where they can have the best impact.

What specifically are you doing to create more clarity in volunteer activities?

Voluntary work in our parishes has developed structures, so careful steps are needed. When new tasks arise or are handed over, they are clearly defined together with those responsible. I accompany these processes, paying attention to interfaces, the involvement of everyone involved and possible risks.

The results are recorded in so-called task profiles. They make transparent what is being done in our parishes – even those who are committed are often surprised at how diverse their activities are. This method has proven itself and is increasingly becoming standard in pastoral care.

What feedback do you get?

The response is predominantly positive. Many people experience appreciation through the task profiles and, especially during handovers, it is noticeable that the volunteers’ efforts are seen, valued and continued. Most people are very grateful for that.

Overall, it is also important to have the courage to allow freedom: If no one is available for a job, you should check the general conditions or consider whether this task is really necessary. Not every parish has to offer everything, but each has particular strengths that should be cultivated. Where there is clarity, joy, personal responsibility and creativity arise. This is how volunteerism can grow and with it the community.
