Memorable Moments: Clare McKenna’s Perfect Wedding Day

Clare McKenna’s wedding day was a beautiful blend of simplicity, spontaneity, and heartfelt connections. Held at the Mill House in Slane, Ireland, on September 20, 2008, the celebration reflected the laid-back nature of the couple. McKenna and her husband, Johnathan, were easygoing and made all their decisions on the spot, from choosing their first house and wedding dress to selecting a venue they had encountered casually.

An Unforeseen Venue

It wasn’t a planned venue visit; it was a chance encounter. Friends of McKenna and Johnathan had recommended the Mill House for a weekend stay. The couple tagged along for a toast and pot of tea. Unbeknownst to them, the venue was showing other couples around. As McKenna recalls, “We just fell in with them and started looking around too.”

Choosing a Date

The couple had conversations about their wedding, with September always seeming like the ideal month. When friends suggested two dates, McKenna and Johnathan thought about it and decided, “Why not?” Their engagement followed naturally, and the Mill House became the wedding venue.

A Beautiful Dress

McKenna initially planned to let her friend, fashion designer Leigh Tucker, craft her wedding dress without venturing into sample sales. She eventually visited Vera Wang’s concession in Brown Thomas. The moment she tried on the dress, her heart was set. “Leigh was standing beside me, and we looked in the mirror, and we both said, this is it,” she remembers.

A Relaxing Morning

McKenna’s day officially kicked off at 3 pm, providing ample time for a leisurely morning. “I woke up feeling fantastic and went downstairs to have breakfast,” she said. The sun was shining, and the unusually hot weather added to the day’s perfect ambiance.

The Pre-Church Moment

Before leaving for the church, McKenna was captured in a moment of pure joy by her father and uncle. “I remember looking in the mirror, and I couldn’t believe it was me! I had never felt so good in my life,” she reminisced. This photograph, along with their wedding rings, remains a cherished memory.

The Speeches

Johnathan’s speech touched McKenna deeply. “My dad told me to listen to it whenever I’m annoyed at him,” she notes. McKenna, who spoke professionally, recognized her speech lacked the memorable qualities of Johnathan’s. “It was a missed opportunity for me to dedicate my words to celebrating him more,” she reflects.

The First Dance

Originally, they planned to dance to the Ramones’ “Baby I Love You.” However, McKenna suggested a change to Estelle’s “You Are” closer to the wedding date. “Looking back, I wonder why I didn’t stick with the Ramones,” she muses, “Why didn’t I take that chance to slow down with my husband that day?”

Fond Family Moments

For McKenna, the essence of the day was the close connections among family and friends. With many attendees from her hometown, the community spirit created an electrifying atmosphere. “We all had a ball, and we all danced until the end,” she says.

Saving the Moment

The next morning, McKenna and Johnathan returned to the Mill House, capturing a final photo as a momento. “We put our hands up with our wedding rings, and it was a brilliant day,” she reflects. “I wanted to hang on to every second of it.”
