Clair Obscur AI Controversy | Game of the Year Loss

When the French “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33” was released early this year, it was a sudden successwith millions of copies sold in a short time and loads of accolades.

Recently, it also won nine awards at The Game Awards, where it won, among other things, in the game of the year category. By MovieZine, however, it received an honorable second place.

Since then, even more players have opened their eyes to it, but as it usually happens when something becomes popular enough, so have critical eyes turned against it.

Now that “Clair Obscur” is bigger than ever, it has come to light that the developers Sandfall Interactive have used generative AI during development.

It has since led to the game no longer being nominated for any awards Indie Game Awardswho have zero tolerance for it. Although these features were quickly updated after the game was released, it is thus disqualified from the competition and prices have been withdrawn.

It all came up in the context of a debate surrounding the use of AI tools in game development, which was sparked when “Baldur’s Gate 3” studio Larian Studios revealed that they are using it during the development of their upcoming “Divinity”.

According to reports, Sandfall Interactive used AI tools “minimal”, for some textures such as posters on lampposts and the like – which were then quickly patched away.

The awards that “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33” were awarded were the debut game of the year and the game of the year, which are now instead given to “Sorry We’re Closed” and “Blue Prince”.
