Empowering Future Citizens: Building Cultural education for Democratic Spaces

Reimagining Urban Spaces Through Education and Participation

The Berlin Foundation, in collaboration with the Urban Nation Museum, is championing a multifaceted approach to empower children and adolescents within their communities. Central to this initiative are projects focused on building cultural education, designed to foster democratic coexistence through active participation and a sense of responsibility within the built environment.

as part of the “naughty – art party,” a district-wide festival hosted by the Urban nation Museum, the Berliner Life Foundation recently hosted an open forum to explore the potential of building cultural education. This event, held at a specially constructed speakers’ corner on Zietenstraße, showcased projects like the “little builders” initiative and encouraged dialog among experts and community members.

Fostering Democratic Values Through Building Culture

The core principle driving this movement is the belief that building culture necessitates the ability for everyone to consciously perceive, reflect upon, and actively shape their surroundings. This concept, emphasized in the Potsdam Resolution adopted by the Convention of Building Culture in May 2022, underscores the importance of integrating building cultural education at all levels, from traditional schooling to vocational training and continuing education.

Building cultural education offers a important prospect to instill aesthetic, social, enduring, and democratic values. The recent forum delved into how to better leverage this potential through practical examples and focused discussions.

Key Discussion Points: Strengthening Building Cultural Education

The discussion centered around several key questions:

  • How can existing educational formats and funding opportunities be better integrated to strengthen the social impact of building cultural education?
  • What specific implications does this have for local-level programs?
  • What role does participation play in construction processes and the surrounding environment?
  • How can participatory processes be expanded to serve as effective formats for building cultural education?

Expert Perspectives on Building Cultural Education

The panel featured a diverse group of experts, each bringing a unique perspective to the discussion:

  • Jessica Waldera, initiator of “Where can you find the future Stad/TT,” small builder, Berlin
  • Katharina Stahlhoven, Building Cultural Education, Federal Foundation for Building Culture
  • Stefan Anspach, board member Monday foundations, Advisory board foundation Berliner Leben
  • Bernd Tibe, board member BDA Berlin, Chairman of the Management DIGI Building
  • Students of the St. Franziskus School
  • Moderated by Anne Schmedding, Berliner Life Foundation

The Broader Context: Baukultur and Community Engagement

This discussion was part of the “Members as a host” campaign by the Baukultur association and a featured event within the “naughty – art festival.” These initiatives highlight the growing recognition of the importance of building culture in fostering vibrant and engaged communities. As urban development continues to shape our world, empowering citizens with the knowledge and skills to actively participate in the process is crucial for creating truly democratic and sustainable spaces.
