City College pulsated with Afro-Caribbean rhythms on Tuesday, March 18th, as Las Guarracheras, an all-women band, delivered a powerful message of resilience and empowerment. the performance, hosted by the City Department of Music, was a highlight of Women’s History Month, showcasing the vibrant contributions of women to the Latin music scene.

Breaking Barriers in a Male-Dominated industry

Giba Botia, the band’s timbalera, shared the challenges she faced navigating a male-dominated music industry in Colombia. Her story resonated deeply with the audience, underscoring the importance of female depiction and leadership in the arts. According to a 2024 study by the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, women represent only 28% of artists on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, highlighting the ongoing need for greater equity in the music industry.
