Circle to Search: Pixel Gets Samsung Exclusive Feature

Google expands Continuous Circle to Search, which includes continuous translation capabilities, to Pixel devices after the exclusive license on Samsung ends.

Search translation in Circle to Search is now available on Pixel, previously only available on Samsung.

The original Circle to Search (CtS) feature allowed users to take a single capture of the current screen for translation. But a new feature called “Scroll and translate” allows users to keep scrolling on the screen and the system will automatically translate the newly displayed text after waiting a moment.

This is a huge improvement from the previous process where users needed to read a translation of a page, turn off Circle to Search, scroll the screen, and then relaunch CtS every time they wanted to translate.

This feature is especially useful when used in third-party apps that feature feeds, such as when reading menus, news articles, social media posts or comments.

Behind the scenes, Circle to Search will start a screen sharing session. There will be a notification in the status bar. When in continuous mode Users will clearly notice a glowing effect on the screen to show that the feature is working.

There’s also a long pill-shaped tab at the bottom of the screen. Similar to Search Live, users can tap the ‘x’ to stop continuous translation. Or tap the bar to hide it in the lower right corner.

Google launched the Scroll and translate feature in September only for Samsung devices. Yesterday, Google announced on android.com that the feature is now available on select devices. With additional conditions: “Available on supported devices and requires an internet connection. Works on supported apps and surfaces. Results may vary based on image matching. Please check the correctness of your answer.”

To date, we’ve found that every Pixel model we’ve tested has (Including models running stable versions of Google apps) now supports this feature. If you find this feature doesn’t work on other devices, You can express your opinions.

This new feature is another expansion of Circle to Search, joining Google Lens (including on iOS) to detect fraudulent messages in apps.
