This year, the Anglican Church of the Holy Savior of Riga will come alive in a special atmosphere during Christmas, hosting two beloved groups of musicians – the youth choir “Voices” and the indie rock group “Sigma”. Taking place on December 22 and 23 at 8 p.m., as well as a special midnight concert on December 25 at 11 p.m., these festive concerts promise to provide an unforgettable musical experience.
Modern music will play in the historic church
The restored Anglican Church, which recently completed two years of restoration work, will offer its majestic aura for a unique musical collaboration. The ceiling vaults, restored to their original appearance, reminiscent of church architecture at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, will create impressive acoustics both for the a cappella singing of the “Voices” choir and the energetic indie rock sound of the “Sigma” band. This acoustic environment will give you the opportunity to enjoy both the majesty of antiquity and the dynamics of modern music.
The diversity of the program – from choral music to pop gems
The concert program promises to be truly rich and versatile, combining the strengths of two different artistic collectives. The first part of the concert will be dedicated to choral music, with a special place for the compositions of the Estonian composer Arvo Pert, who stand out for their depth and soulfulness. This pre-Christmas season is also a special year for the Sigma group as they celebrate their 20th anniversary. Therefore, the second part of the concert will feature the group’s original music, specially arranged for the choir, as well as compositions by world-famous pop music performers and heartwarming Christmas chorales. The program includes compositions from such artists as The Beatles, Enya, Radiohead, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and others. This allows you to hope for a wide range of listeners, because everyone will find something they like.
Special surprises and a sense of community
This year, “Voices” have prepared a special surprise for their listeners – the choristers’ performance will include not only singing, but also instrumental music. It showcases the versatile talents of the choir members and adds extra depth to the performance. As usual, “Voices” will welcome its listeners with warm gingerbread baked by the choristers and invite them to listen and sing along to Christmas carols, creating an unforgettable sense of togetherness and festive atmosphere. This is proof that “Balsis” not only sings, but also creates a real feeling of celebration.
Choir “Voices” – tradition and innovation
The youth choir “Voices” has been delighting the audience with its Christmas concerts for 28 years, making them an important tradition for many residents of Riga and guests of the city. The choir, founded in 1987, is known for its high artistic level and ability to offer new, interesting programs every year. With about 40 young people in its composition, “Voices” is not only a musical collective, but also a community that understands the deep importance of friendship and cooperation. Their activities are not limited to concerts only – the choir has been involved in various charity and social projects, confirming its social role.
Group “Sigma” – a musical journey of twenty years
The indie rock group “Sigma”, which has existed since 2005, has entered the Latvian music scene with its original sound and the courage to experiment. The group consists of Jānis Ozoliņš (voice, keys), Kaspars Lastovskis (bass) and Uģis Eihvalds (percussion instruments). “Sigma” has been nominated for the prestigious “Golden Microphone” and Austra awards for their albums, which confirms their professional growth and quality.
