Chris O’Dowd Reflects on Dawn O’Porter’s Amusing Irish Catholic Church Experience

Bringing family back to one’s roots can be both joyous and full of unexpected situations. For Chris O’Dowd and his wife, Dawn O’Porter, an Irish Catholic Mass in Dublin turned into an entertaining mishap. The event provided a lighthearted moment that Chris cherished, illustrating the unique blend of cultures in their family.

The Irish Connection

Chris O’Dowd, hailing from Ireland but based in the UK after years living in Los Angeles, visited Dublin for the premiere of his new show, “Small Town, Big Story,” at the Irish Film Institute. Sharing his experience with EVOKE, Chris discussed how he incorporates Irish traditions into his family life. Despite being in London with his wife and two boys, Art, 10, and Valentine, 8, he finds ways to keep Irish culture close.

“We try to keep touches of Ireland in our home,” Chris shared. Among other traditions, he and Dawn teach their sons about great Irish musicians to introduce them to their roots.

The Mass Misadventure

One memorable mishap involved Church etiquette. During a visit to Ireland, Chris took Dawn to Mass, unaware of the protocol. The incident was so comical that Chris found it hard to intervene.

Recalling the event, Chris chuckled, “People were shaking hands, and Dawn thought she could hear what they were saying. She went around to everyone saying ‘pleased to meet you.’ It was utter chaos, but she loved it.” The humor of the situation delighted Chris.

Introducing Irish Culture

Chris is dedicated to preserving his Irish heritage for his children. To familiarize them with their roots, he has been playing Irish music in the house, particularly the songs of Christy Moore.

“I’ve been playing them a lot of Christy Moore lately,” Chris noted. “The songs have become a favorite, especially ‘Welcome to the Cabaret.’ My son loves the part where Christy goes, ‘dee dee lay la pa dee da dee da da,’ and it brings a smile to everyone’s face.”

Understanding Different Cultures

While Chris and Dawn often find themselves in scenarios that blend their different backgrounds, it brings them closer together. Dawn, originally from Guernsey, isn’t unfamiliar with small town life and finds much to love about Ireland.

“She’s from a small town, really, and Guernsey is not dissimilar in lots of ways,” Chris said. “She loves it here, and I think that’s part of why she enjoys these Irish experiences so much.”

Shooting “Small Town, Big Story” in Ireland

Chris and Dawn’s experiences are not isolated. Other cast members, like Christina Hendricks, also faced unusual situations while filming “Small Town, Big Story” in Ireland.

“Christina was taken aback by how everyone works through all the challenges,” Chris noted. “In one scene, there was a lot of shooting in the rain and mud, but they didn’t hesitate to keep going. That’s the Irish work ethic for you.”

Valentine’s Day Plans

Like many couples during Valentine’s Day, Chris and Dawn had their own special arrangements. Chris planned to host Christina Hendricks for a TV appearance, while Dawn stayed at home with the children.

“I’ll be on the Late Late Show with Christina, and Dawn will be at home with the kids,” Chris shared. “I’m taking her to a hotel next week. The flowers are on the way, and it’s all grand.”
