Chřibská Shooting: Dozens of Bullets Fired

The town of Chřibská is recovering from the tragedy that shook the locals. On Monday shortly before ten o’clock in the morning, the police received a report of a shooting at the local municipal office.

The attacker also shot at the policemen, who returned fire. One of the office’s employees died on the spot. Six others were injured, but their lives are currently out of danger. Two of them are still hospitalized in the hospital, where they are under medical supervision, the other injured were released to home treatment after treatment. The mayor of the city, Jan Machač, is among the injured.

Four illegal guns

The man had two pistols, a revolver and a self-loading rifle at the scene. But he kept the weapons illegally, he did not have a firearms permit. Therefore, among other things, the police initiated criminal proceedings in the case of illegal arming.

“There were not three illegally held weapons found on the spot, but four,” Kamil Marek, spokesman for the Ustě police, clarified earlier information.

The attacker died with his own weapon

According to the police, the attacker died before half past eleven in the morning. He shot himself with his own illegally held weapon. According to the police, he had the aforementioned four guns with him.

After the death of the assailant, detectives searched the building, and found no other assailant or other injuries. Subsequently, detectives secured the scene of the crime and began examining it and securing evidence, which lasted until late at night. Criminal investigators interviewed those involved and the site was also searched by a pyrotechnician and a special explosive detection dog, which is standard procedure in this case.

A crisis intervention line was also set up and received a total of 30 calls for help or support during Monday. Psychologists and crisis interventionists also helped those affected at the scene.

Possible injuries from service weapons

According to the police, it is possible that one injured woman was hit by a bullet from a service weapon. Her intervention occurred during a shootout with an attacker shortly after one of the policemen was shot through a closed door and the policemen therefore returned fire.

“I can’t tell you some things about the ongoing investigation, we are waiting for expertise, forensic autopsies and the like,” Kamil Marek, spokesman for the Ústí police, told the editorial office. Experts should perform the autopsy on Tuesday.

The General Inspection of Security Forces (GIBS) is therefore dealing with Monday’s shooting in Chřibská na Děčínsk.

The motive was apparently personal

According to the police, there is no indication of a terrorist or extremist motive, the attacker’s motivation had no political or religious undertones. The police are still investigating the exact motive, but it was most likely a personal relationship issue.

On Tuesday morning, criminal investigators will, among other things, conduct a house search at the suspect’s residence, criminal proceedings are ongoing in the case, the case is qualified as a suspicion of committing a particularly serious crime of murder. An autopsy will also take place today to determine the exact cause of death of the attacker and one of the victims.

The attacker had a history of drug problems

During the investigation, the police discovered that the attacker was a 39-year-old man, and at the time of the attack he had an illegally held revolver, a self-loading rifle and two self-loading pistols with him. They will be subjected to ballistic expertise.

According to the findings of the editor of Seznam Zpráv, the attacker had a reputation among the locals as a weirdo with a penchant for weapons, and according to some residents, he was taking drugs. “From what I heard, the guy had a lot of weapons at home, illegally. I knew him from sight. He had a bad past before, he was a drug addict,” described local resident Radek, for example.

The man has already been dealt with by the police in the past for property and drug crimes, driving a motor vehicle under the influence of narcotic substances and obstructing an official decision and report.
