Chocó Remains Vigilant Against Yellow Fever Threat
While a national emergency has been declared due to a surge in yellow fever cases across Colombia, the government of Chocó reports no recent cases within its jurisdiction. however, authorities are not complacent. They have been on high alert sence 2018 due to the persistent presence of the Haemagogus and Sabethes mosquitoes, the vectors responsible for transmitting the virus, within the region’s jungles.
This proactive stance is crucial,considering that yellow fever,a viral hemorrhagic disease transmitted by infected mosquitoes,can cause severe illness and even death. According to the World Health Institution (WHO), yellow fever is preventable with a safe and effective vaccine, which provides lifelong immunity.
Accessible Vaccination: A Cornerstone of Chocó’s Strategy
Recognizing the importance of prevention,the Chocó government has made vaccination readily accessible to its population. Currently, 43 healthcare centers are equipped to administer the yellow fever vaccine free of charge. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding public health and preventing outbreaks.
The governorate emphasizes that a single dose of the yellow fever vaccine provides lifelong protection, eliminating the need for booster shots. This makes vaccination a highly effective and efficient means of preventing the disease.
Yellow fever vaccination is offered to the entire population that lives or travels through the territory from 9 months of age, without access barriers and irrespective of affiliation to the health, nationality or immigration status system. We call on citizens to remain alert and adopt the necessary preventive measures.

yellow fever is endemic in tropical areas of Africa and South America. The virus is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Symptoms can range from mild fever and headache to more severe complications such as jaundice, bleeding, and organ failure.
Beyond vaccination, preventive measures include using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants, and avoiding mosquito-prone areas, especially during peak biting times. Eliminating mosquito breeding sites, such as standing water in containers, is also crucial.
