China’s Vital Role in Upholding Openness and Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific Region
In an era marked by anti-globalization sentiment, rising protectionism, and unilateralism, the importance of fostering openness and cooperation within the global economy has never been more critical. As the world’s second-largest economy, China has taken significant steps to ensure the Asia-Pacific region remains a key driver of economic globalization.
Enhancing Connectivity Through Major Infrastructure Projects
One of the cornerstones of China’s efforts to expand regional cooperation is the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), aimed at improving connectivity through improved roads, railways, and ports. These projects have brought transformative changes across the Asia-Pacific, enhancing both economic and social outcomes.
The Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway: A Model of Regional Connectivity
In Indonesia, the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway has become a landmark project, marking Southeast Asia’s first high-speed rail line built in partnership with China. Since its inauguration in October 2023, it has transported over 5.79 million passengers.
Known affectionately as “Whoosh,” the railway has spurred development along its route. Local businesses have flourished due to the ease of travel between two of Indonesia’s largest cities at 350 km per hour.
Boosting Cross-border Trade with the China-Laos Railway
The China-Laos Railway, connecting Kunming in Yunnan Province and Vientiane, the capital of Laos, has played a significant role in boosting regional connectivity. This project has facilitated a substantial reduction in the time and cost of transporting goods like machinery, electronics, and farm products across the border.
“The railway connects Laos more directly with China, one of the world’s largest consumer markets,” highlighted Somsavanh, a fruit vendor in Vientiane.
This development has not only improved logistical efficiency but has also opened up new opportunities for cultural exchange. Chinese travel agencies report an increased number of tourists from Southeast Asian countries visiting Xishuangbanna, a tourist destination in Yunnan.
Facilitating Global Mobility and Cultural Exchange
To further ease global exchanges and mobility, China has expanded its visa-free and visa-on-arrival arrangements to include more countries in the Asia-Pacific region. In 2024, visa-free entries were extended to nations such as Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, and Japan.
Additionally, agreements between China and Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore to waive travel visa requirements for each other’s citizens have welcomed a surge in tourism driven by Chinese travelers in Southeast Asia.
Leveraging Innovation to Shape a Green Digital Future
China has gained recognition for its significant contributions to technological innovation, ranking 11th on the Global Innovation Index in 2024. China continues to emphasize the importance of fostering an open and innovative ecosystem in the region, aiming to establish a green and digital Asia-Pacific economy.
BYD’s Impact on Thailand’s Automotive Industry
In Thailand, one of the leading automotive production hubs in Southeast Asia, Chinese carmaker BYD’s factory commenced operations in July, with an annual production capacity of 150,000 vehicles.
BYD is not only exporting complete vehicles but also investing in building local factories. This approach has dual benefits for both Chinese manufacturers and local automotive industries, promoting the adoption of electric vehicles and reducing carbon emissions.
“China’s leadership in the EV market fosters production collaboration and accelerates the growth of supply chain industries,” echoed Rachanida Nitipathanapirak, vice president of the Strategic Department at the Thailand Automotive Institute.
TCL’s Expansion in Vietnam: Building Sustainable Supply Chains
Another example of Chinese investment contributing to local growth is TCL Group’s Binh Duong factory in Vietnam, one of the largest digital production bases established by a Chinese TV brand.
TCL’s investment of over 100 million USD in Vietnam has created more than 10,000 jobs. The company’s strategy emphasizes building supply chains locally, with plans to establish a comprehensive support center for upstream and downstream industries.
“Our goal is to be deeply rooted in the local economy and contribute to its development,” stresses Li Dongsheng, founder and chairman of TCL.
Promoting Inclusive Growth and Social Development
China’s vision for Asia-Pacific development includes supporting developing economies and disadvantaged groups, ensuring that more individuals and regions benefit from economic growth.
A Green Project in Pakistan: Transforming Barren Land into a Prosperous Forest
In Gwadar Port, Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province, a collaborative effort between China Overseas Port Holding Company and local communities has resulted in the planting of over 4,000 trees in a friendship forest.
“One day, a Chinese manager informed us of the plan to transform this land into a forest, and it began from there,” recalled Muhammad Iqbal, a local resident.
This green initiative not only improves environmental conditions but also provides job opportunities and increases income for local farmers through forestry activities.
Empowering Women in Farming: China’s Aid in Fiji
In Fiji, a decade-old China-aided technical project has significantly benefitted local women. Seruwaia Waiti Kabukabu, involved in the Naitasiri Women in Dairy Group, now chairs the Fiji Mushroom Farmers Association.
Kabukabu’s experience demonstrates the transformative impact of Chinese aid initiatives. Her first batch of mushrooms generated 2,500 Fijian dollars, allowing her to purchase essential household items.
“This project provided new opportunities, changing the lives and careers of women, making our dreams come true,” she said.
Conclusion: China’s Commitment to a Sustainable and Connected Asia-Pacific
China’s efforts in fostering connectivity, innovation, and inclusive growth exemplify its commitment to promoting regional cooperation and economic development. Through initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative, China is upholding the principles of globalization, ensuring the Asia-Pacific remains a dynamic and prosperous region in the face of global challenges.
