The installation of steel structures by China in the overlapping Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) has been met with strong criticism, particularly concerning the lack of a definitive response from the democratic Party, the National assembly’s majority party.

Ho Jun-seok, a spokesperson for the Peopel Power Party, voiced concerns over China’s actions, drawing parallels to it’s activities in the South and East China Seas, including the construction of artificial islands and natural gas drilling, which infringe upon disputed territories. The spokesperson questioned the Democratic Party’s silence on these matters, contrasting it with the likely uproar if Japan were to engage in similar actions in the East Sea (Sea of Japan).

Earlier this year, China unilaterally began erecting steel structures in the Korea-China tentative measures zone, an area where the EEZs of both nations overlap. On February 26th, the South Korean government dispatched a maritime examination vessel to assess these structures. However, the inspection was reportedly thwarted when the Chinese side confronted the vessel with weaponry, highlighting the escalating tensions in the region.
