Recent events in the west Sea (Yellow Sea) have ignited a fierce debate in south Korea regarding China’s growing maritime assertiveness. The installation of steel structures by China in the overlapping Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) has been met with strong criticism, particularly concerning the lack of a definitive response from the democratic Party, the National assembly’s majority party.

Political Divide Widens over China Policy

Ho Jun-seok, a spokesperson for the Peopel Power Party, voiced concerns over China’s actions, drawing parallels to it’s activities in the South and East China Seas, including the construction of artificial islands and natural gas drilling, which infringe upon disputed territories. The spokesperson questioned the Democratic Party’s silence on these matters, contrasting it with the likely uproar if Japan were to engage in similar actions in the East Sea (Sea of Japan).

What is unknown is the attitude of the Democratic Party, the majority of the National Assembly… The Democratic Party becomes smaller in front of China.

The People Power Party has urged the Democratic Party and its leader, Lee Jae-myung, to clarify their stance on China’s construction activities. This call for a clear position comes after a controversial incident involving the former Chinese Ambassador to South Korea, who allegedly warned of potential regret if South Korea “bets on the United States.”

Confrontation at Sea: A Failed Inspection

Earlier this year, China unilaterally began erecting steel structures in the Korea-China tentative measures zone, an area where the EEZs of both nations overlap. On February 26th, the South Korean government dispatched a maritime examination vessel to assess these structures. However, the inspection was reportedly thwarted when the Chinese side confronted the vessel with weaponry, highlighting the escalating tensions in the region.

Echoes of the South China Sea: A Pattern of Assertiveness

This incident is not isolated. China’s actions mirror its behavior in the South China Sea, where it has constructed artificial islands, effectively turning them into military outposts in disputed waters claimed by the Philippines, Vietnam, and other nations. These actions have been widely condemned as violations of international law and threats to regional stability. According to the Council on Foreign Relations, China has reclaimed over 3,200 acres of land in the South china Sea, building runways, ports, and military installations.

China insists on sovereignty by making three artificial islands like a military fortress in the South China Sea, where there is a dispute between the Philippines and Vietnam.

Seeking a Unified Response: Public Debate and Diplomatic Strategy

The People Power Party is intensifying efforts to raise public awareness and formulate a cohesive response to China’s actions. A public debate, titled “China’s West Sea Fair Emergency Response Debate,” is scheduled for March 25th, featuring prominent figures such as Na Kyung-won, Park Deok-heum, Kim mi-ae, and Lim Jong-deuk.The aim is to address the potential diplomatic and security ramifications of China’s unilateral actions.

China’s unilateral structure of the West Sea is a sensitive issue that can harm trust between the two countries and cause potential conflicts in diplomatic and security.

The situation underscores the delicate balance South Korea must strike in navigating its relationship with China, its largest trading partner, while safeguarding its sovereign rights and maintaining its alliance with the United States. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining the trajectory of this increasingly complex geopolitical challenge.
