Who is Evelyn Matthei, Piñera’s former minister who seeks to win the elections in Chile?
Evelyn Matthei, candidate of the traditional right, arrives at the November 16 elections at 72 years old and with a consolidated political career. Former senator, former minister, mayor and economist, she focuses her campaign on security and order, with a “tough line” speech against crime and organized crime. In this election she is looking for her second attempt to reach La Moneda, backed by her experience and her historical link with Sebastián Piñera.
Daughter of General Fernando Matthei, her family biography has marked her career both for its military weight and for the controversies related to the dictatorship. He has recognized human rights violations, although he has also made controversial statements. His professional life began in music before turning to economics, where he built the technical profile that today supports his proposal. Who is Johannes Kaiser, the candidate who is tensioning the Chilean right and third in polls?
Johannes Kaiser, deputy and founder of the National Libertarian Party, entered the presidential campaign as the candidate seeking to break with the traditional right and challenge both José Antonio Kast and Evelyn Matthei. His proposal mixes radical economic liberalism with a heavy-handed security agenda and a conservative cultural discourse that promises “ideological purity” in the face of what he considers an affluent and directionless right.
Kaiser claims individual freedom to the extreme—“I don’t get into the bed, the church, or people’s minds,” he says—but at the same time he proposes severe measures such as reestablishing mandatory military service, reopening regiments, and applying the death penalty for certain crimes. Economically, it offers a State reduced to a minimum; Politically, he stands as a reference for a right “with conviction”, criticizing that in Chile “ideology often runs out on the credit card.” With this mix, Kaiser has become one of the candidates most shaking up the sector just days before the November 16 elections.

Who is José Antonio Kast, the far-right candidate seeking to win the elections for the third time?
José Antonio Kast, lawyer and leader of the Republican Party, is competing for the presidency for the third time with a program focused on public order, cutting state spending and immigration control. His star proposal—a US$6 billion adjustment and his “Relentless Plan” for security—seeks to capitalize on the unrest regarding crime and the economy, although experts point out that it lacks technical details.
His advance could reorder the political map: if he reaches the second round, it would push the traditional right to align with him and would strain the moderate electorate. With a tough speech, compared to the style of Javier Milei, Kast faces the challenge of expanding his base without diluting his conservative identity in a campaign marked by polarization.

Who is Jeannette Jara, the official candidate and poll favorite?
Jeannette Jara, lawyer, former Minister of Labor and member of the Communist Party, seeks to reach La Moneda as the unitary card of the left in a scenario dominated by insecurity and the economy. Its program prioritizes these two axes, in addition to strengthening the health system, and proposes promoting growth from internal demand. Although he receives support from the progressive bloc, he faces the challenge of convincing an electorate that has punished the left in recent processes.
His career combines student leadership, union experience and public management, including his work in the SII and his role in Gabriel Boric’s cabinet. If he comes to power, he would have to negotiate with moderate and right-wing sectors in a fragmented Congress, which could strain his social proposals. With this candidacy, Jara aspires to become the first president of Chile from the PC, a historic fact after decades of exclusion and persecution during the dictatorship.
