A recent study highlights significant price variations in hotels and restaurants across Europe, revealing surprising affordability in Southern and Eastern countries.

As rising living costs impact german households, finding affordable vacation options becomes crucial. Teh Federal Statistical Office’s annual survey identifies the most and least expensive European holiday destinations, with Southern and Eastern Europe offering ample savings.

Vacation Costs Substantially Higher Than in Germany

The Federal Statistical Office compares restaurant and hotel service prices across Europe with those in Germany,using purchasing power parities determined by Eurostat. This comparison reveals transparent price differences between countries.

Vacationing in Switzerland and Scandinavian countries is notably expensive for Germans. Switzerland leads with prices 52% higher than in Germany, followed by Iceland (49% higher).Denmark is 28% more expensive, and Norway 25%. even Sweden, often perceived as affordable, is 8% above German price levels.

Affordable European Destinations for German Travelers

Albania, Northern Macedonia, and Bulgaria offer notably attractive prices, with restaurant and hotel services costing about half of what they would in Germany. Albania boasts an untouched Adriatic coast, North Macedonia offers cultural treasures, and Bulgaria features both Black Sea beaches and mountain landscapes.

Othre Southern European countries also offer significant price advantages,including Montenegro (42% lower costs) and Portugal (35% savings). Turkey (31%) and Malta (30%) are also significantly below German price levels. Popular destinations like Spain, Greece, cyprus, and Croatia offer savings between 14% and 25%.Even Italy is 6% cheaper than Germany.

Italy, a favorite among German tourists, faces challenges due to overcrowding. A popular destination in South Tyrol is introducing an entry fee to manage visitor flows,similar to measures taken in Venice.

Budget-Friendly Vacations in Neighboring Countries

For those seeking closer destinations, neighboring countries offer affordable options. The Czech Republic has restaurant and hotel prices 33% below German levels, while Poland is 15% less expensive. France offers a slight 3% price advantage. Austria, however, has prices comparable to Germany.

City trips can also be affordable, with Europe’s hidden cities offering unforgettable experiences at lower prices. Experts advise on the best time to book and how to save money.
