JAKARTA – The generative artificial intelligence (GAI) market is increasingly competitive. While ChatGPT remains the market leader since its launch nearly three years ago, recent data shows that Gemini, Google’s AI chatbot, is starting to catch up.
According to a Similarweb report released this week, Gemini doubled its share of web traffic last year, while ChatGPT’s dominance is gradually eroding.
A year ago, ChatGPT controlled 86.6% of AGI-related web traffic, an impressive and previously unmatched figure. Even today, ChatGPT captures more than 70% of traffic.
However, Gemini has reached an important milestone. For the first time, Google’s chatbot captured more than 10% of traffic, making it ChatGPT’s main competitor in an increasingly saturated market.
Gemini: Sustained, constant and now significant growth
Last year, Gemini accounted for only 5.6% of traffic. Six months ago, this figure had increased slightly to 5.9%, following the sudden rise of DeepSeek, which briefly dethroned it.
But the trend is reversing:
3 months ago: Gemini reached 8.6%.
2 months ago: Further increase to 12.9%, while ChatGPT fell to 74.1%.
Currently: Gemini holds 13.7%, while ChatGPT has fallen slightly to 72.3%.
Interestingly, Gemini is the only AI platform to see sustained growth in every Similarweb measurement period over the past year.
Other platforms, like DeepSeek and Perplexity, have seen fluctuations, while Gemini continues to rise.
Competition is fierce in the AI market.
Since the emergence of ChatGPT in 2022, major companies such as Google, Meta, Microsoft, Perplexity, Anthropic, and xAI are competing to increase their share of the generative AI market.
Although ChatGPT maintains a large lead, recent trends indicate that its position is no longer uncontested. Gemini’s meteoric growth demonstrates Google’s gaining ground in the global competition in artificial intelligence.
