ChatGPT Cheating: Flemish Med & Dental Students Under Investigation

More than six thousand candidates are working today on the entrance examination examination and dentistry at Brussels Expo, under close surveillance. In Flanders, suspicions of cheating have tarnished the previous session, strengthening the attention paid this time to the control device.

It all starts in early July. 5,444 students participate in the entrance examination of medicine and dentistry. 1741 places are available. A total of 2608 students are successful. Or a success rate twice as high as in 2024 and which surprises. A few days later, three students see their examined exam. They would have cheated using Chatgpt during the exam. This takes place on a computer and in 70 different places.

“There are 5,000 participants. We cannot check everyone’s research history ”. Why not ? “Due to the size and number of students,” said Jan Eggermont, president of the examination committee.

Quickly, the controversy swells. Several students who have successfully completed the exam but who were not admitted suspects massive fraud.

“I saw that we could click on a tab but I did not dare to do it because I thought that a screen or something was going to happen,” said Marie, participant in the Medicine Entry Competition.

Fifteen of them decide to start legal proceedings.

“There are many students who feel unjustly treated and who noticed it during the exam,” says Christophe Van Geel, lawyer. They now notice that they are not the only ones in the case. ”

An investigation is under collaboration with IT experts. The return of the paper exam could be considered next year.
