Charlotte Theater: 20 Years of Performances & Milestones

by Archynetys Entertainment Desk

Charlotte Theater, Korea’s first musical-only theater, celebrated its 20th anniversary and unveiled on the 19th the records that have led to the rapid growth of the domestic performing arts industry over the past 20 years.

While the musical market has recently grown rapidly with annual sales reaching KRW 500 billion, Charlotte Theater has led the quantitative and qualitative growth of the overall industry based on its unrivaled infrastructure and stable operating capabilities.

Since opening in 2006, a total of 53 carefully selected masterpieces have been staged at the Charlotte Theater, with over 7,100 performances performed and approximately 1,950 actors on stage.

The cumulative number of viewers is approximately 6.5 million, and the total length of tickets issued so far is 971.5km. This is more than a round-trip distance between Seoul and Busan, and is an indicator that proves the overwhelming status that Charlotte Theater has built as Korea’s representative musical theater.

Charlotte Theater was designed with the goal of being a ‘performing hall optimized for musicals’ and is equipped with the highest level of stage equipment and facilities.

The distance between the stage and the audience is minimized to vividly convey the actors’ emotions and breathing, and the musical’s dedicated sound system precisely balances dialogue and sound. The antique interior was added to create Charlotte Theater’s unique atmosphere.

In particular, the fact that it expanded accessibility by introducing the ‘subtitle glasses commercialization service’ for the first time in a major theater symbolically shows the direction of Charlotte Theater, which has continuously evolved the viewing environment.

The average audience occupancy rate for the past three years has exceeded 90%, proving its reputation as a ‘theater you can trust’ with numbers.

Charlotte Theater has pioneered experiential content that expands performance viewing into a ‘cultural experience.’

Including ‘Curtain Call in Charlotte’, Korea’s first performance hall/musical pub collaborative space, ‘scent marketing’ containing the theme of the work, and ‘listening event’ to enjoy the number before the performance, all moments of staying at the theater were made special.

“Based on the know-how we have accumulated while operating a musical theater for the past 20 years, we will strive to present the best stage to all audiences who visit the Charlotte Theater,” said Yoon Sein, head of the Live Business Division at Lotte Cultureworks. “In celebration of the 60th anniversary of the birth of Korean musicals, as a representative performance hall that creates the present and future of musicals, we will contribute in various ways to the expansion of the performance market and cultural development.”
