Xinhua News Agency, Lanzhou, November 9 (Reporter Liang Jun) PetroChina Changqing Oilfield announced publicly on November 9 that its cumulative shale oil production exceeded 20 million tons, marking that my country’s continental shale oil has entered a new stage of scale-effective development.

The Ordos Basin shale oil developed by the Changqing Oilfield is buried more than 2,000 meters underground. The reservoir pressure is much lower than that of conventional oil reservoirs, making it impossible to rely on natural energy to drive development. Moreover, the reservoir permeability is only one thousandth of that of conventional oil fields, making it difficult to achieve effective exploitation with conventional technology.

Faced with the technical dilemma of “no extraction”, Changqing Oilfield has defined the core path of “fracturing and fracture creation + precise energy replenishment”, opening up artificial channels in tight reservoirs through fracturing, injecting energy carriers at high pressure to activate the reservoir, and building an efficient development seepage channel.

Through a series of core technological breakthroughs, Changqing Oilfield continues to improve shale oil recovery. Changqing Oilfield independently developed 12 key core technologies such as soluble metal ball seats and multi-functional fracturing fluids to achieve independent and controllable technology. It applied green and efficient carbon dioxide flooding technology to drive the daily output of a single well to increase from 1.5 tons to 18 tons, and the overall technology reached the internationally advanced level.

Changqing Oilfield has built an important domestic shale oil production area in the Ordos Basin, providing understanding and practical experience for the large-scale and profitable development of my country’s shale oil resources. According to reports, it took Changqing Oilfield 12 years from the start of shale oil technology research to the cumulative production of 10 million tons, and only three years to climb from 10 million tons to 20 million tons.
