CGIL Assembly: Minnesota & US Repression – Agenda

by Archynetys News Desk

The General Assembly of the CGIL expresses profound shock and indignation at the serious events that have occurred in the United States and in particular in Minnesota, where on 23 January 2026 a general strike and a mass demonstration denounced the repression and violence of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The killing of the poet Renee Good and the nurse Alex Pretti, a healthcare worker, unarmed and shot to death while defending an arrested woman, together with the arrest of the minor Liam Conejo Ramos, represent a dramatic attack on human rights, freedom of association and the right to peaceful protest. ICE, under the Trump administration, acts as a repressive force that spreads terror through raids and intimidation, targeting workers, migrants, families and minors, including in workplaces and schools. An example of this is the threats and intimidation against a RAI crew in Minnesota to which the general assembly expresses solidarity. His possible presence in Italy for the Winter Olympics would be a slap in the face to democracy and an institutional affront.

These practices constitute a wound to the entire world of work and to democratic coexistence. The Minnesota mobilization represents a significant example of civil and trade union resistance against an authoritarian drift based on fear, racism and repression.

The Assembly expresses full solidarity with the families of the victims, with the American trade union confederation AFL-CIO and with all the workers and citizens involved in the defense of fundamental rights and commits the CGIL to strengthening relations of solidarity with the US trade unions and with the international trade union movement, to support the ongoing mobilizations, and to defend everywhere the rights of migrants, minors and the freedom of organization and protest.
