CF Montreal Kicks Off 2025 MLS Season with Optimism and New Beginnings
In 2024, CF Montreal made a strong push for the MLS Cup playoffs, finishing the season with a remarkable 4-2-1 record in its last seven games. Though the team eventually lost to Atlanta United on penalty kicks in the play-in round, an encouraging sense of optimism emerged, marking a potential turning point for the club.
Season Off and On-Field Transitions
After a 123-day off-season, CF Montreal is now setting the final touches on its preparation for the 2025 campaign. Club President Gabriel Gervais expressed confidence in the club’s strategic moves, emphasizing that the additions to both the squad and the technical staff have significantly strengthened the team. “Everything is in place, and we’re well-prepared for what lies ahead,” said Gervais.
One of the primary challenges faced by CF Montreal has been the absence of its usual training facilities. With the club’s training ground not fully winterized and Olympic Stadium undergoing renovations, the team has been conducting most of its training camps in the southern United States. This arrangement has not only helped acclimatize new signings but also fostered a strong sense of unity among the players. “The intensity in training camp has been right, and it’s clear that everyone is excited about the upcoming season,” highlighted Gervais.
Blending Old with New
The 2025 roster includes nine new players and two academy graduates, adding depth and quality to the team. Captain Samuel Piette, who recently signed a three-year contract extension, expressed his enthusiasm about the new arrivals. “The guys are hungry and trying to make a name for themselves. Our team has a lot of depth, and we could replace any player without compromising our quality,” Piette said.
However, the loss of experienced strikers Josef Martinez and Matias Coccaro, who combined for 19 goals and four assists in the previous season, represents a significant challenge to the offensive lineup. New designated player Giacomo Vrioni, acquired through a trade with New England, is expected to fill this gap. Though Vrioni is currently sidelined with a calf injury and will miss the season opener, he brings high potential and quality to the CF Montreal attack.
Challenges Ahead: Road Trip Protocol
In keeping with tradition, CF Montreal’s 2025 season will begin with an extended road trip, featuring seven games away from Saputo Stadium. Last year, the club struggled early in the season, winning just two games in a three-month period after an initial burst of success. This year, Head Coach Laurent Courtois acknowledges potential challenges, stating, “We will still make mistakes, but it’s about minimizing them. We know who we can count on and what’s challenging us, so we feel more prepared.”
The young squad, with only four players over the age of 26, brings both energy and inexperience to the table. However, the returning players, regardless of their own experience levels, are ready to lead the way in integrating the newcomers. “Seeing that we play a lot of away games now and through most of the summer when we’re playing every three days motivates us,” said goalkeeper Jonathan Sirois. “Being away helps us bond as a team.”
Atlanta Match Preview
The season opener against Atlanta United promises to be a high-stakes encounter. Atlanta, coming off a surprising campaign where they eliminated both Montreal and Inter Miami, represents one of the stronger teams in the Eastern Conference. Courtois emphasized that although Atlanta possesses a talented roster, CF Montreal is not intimidated. “We’re not scared of anyone. We respect every team, but we can’t be afraid of anybody,” he said.
With a season filled with challenges and opportunities, CF Montreal’s preparations showcase a blend of experience and new beginnings. As the team looks towards the future, one thing remains clear—the club is approaching the 2025 MLS season with renewed optimism and a focused approach.
