The Cervantes Institute in Algiers will host this Monday, November 10, the colloquium “Memory, exile and diplomacy”, within the framework of the program “Spain in Freedom: 50 years of democracy” to commemorate “the success of the collective process that represented the political, economic and social transformation of Spain when it went from a dictatorship to democracy.”

The round table, presented by the Spanish ambassador to Algeria, Fernando Morán, will include Luis García Montero, director of the Cervantes Institute; José Ignacio Madrazo, Mexican ambassador to Algeria, and Mohamed Khelladi, Algerian diplomat and former Algerian ambassador to Spain.

As Cervantes recalled, the Spanish Government launched the official commemoration “Spain in Freedom. 50 years” to celebrate democracy and freedom after the death of Franco in 1975. It is an initiative with more than one hundred cultural, educational and leisure activities that seek to remember the path traveled, honor those who made it possible and transmit the value of democracy to new generations. The activities, coordinated by a special Commissioner, are carried out throughout Spain and internationally throughout 2025.

This meeting takes place within the framework of an institutional trip by the director of the Institute to the Maghreb country, in which a meeting is also planned with the ambassador of Spain in Algeria, Fernando Morán, and a visit to the Cervantes in Algiers together with its director, Sandra Rivas.
