The Minister of Finance, Alexandru Nazare, spoke on Thursday evening, on Digi24, about the deadlines announced by the CCR for judging the appeal submitted by AUR to the law that increases taxes. Initially, the Constitutional Court had announced that it would judge the appeal on February 4, then advanced the deadline to January 21, 2026, after which it came back and announced that it would discuss it on December 10, in order not to block its application from January 1. About these terms, Alexandru Nazare said that Romania “got a bullet in the temple”. The Minister of Finance said that he was in a meeting with representatives of the World Bank when he heard the date of January 21 and immediately left the meeting to talk to the Prime Minister and the European Commission. “During the afternoon, I received the news that it was moved from January 21 to December 10. I think that December 10 is a good deadline,” Nazare pointed out.
“On December 10, it is clear that it is good, there is enough time for this legislative package to be promulgated within the year 2025, to be valid for 2026, so that it can be applied from January 1. The problem was that it could no longer be applied from January 1, if the discussion took place in February or in January next year,” said Alexandru Nazare to Digi24.
Before we discuss money, let’s discuss trust. We have regained trust and the level of trust in relation to international partners, the European Commission, rating agencies. It has been an extremely difficult process over the last four months, where, step by step, we have managed to regain this trust, and it would have been a shame to lose it.
“Of course, the construction of the 2026 budget would have been much more complicated, because the equation of these revenues depended significantly on the 2026 budget, and there would have been implications for the PNRR as well, with possible frozen amounts in some places. So, the bullet passed through our temple. We were in discussions with the World Bank, and I left immediately when I saw the news and, of course, I started We immediately called the Commission, so that there is a permanent dialogue and that there is no syncope, that they know exactly what we are doing and, of course, in a permanent dialogue with the prime minister,” the minister added.
“I think December 10 is a good term”
“A little later, during the afternoon, I received word that it had been moved from January 21st to December 10th. I think December 10th is a good deadline, especially since this legislative package had been in the Court for over 70 days. The Court had made observations on the package. We took care to completely remove the paragraphs that the Court was referring to, so that there would be no doubt when the law was approved again, so basically we had taken our precautions necessary”, concluded Alexandru Nazare.
