The Catalan Traffic Service (SCT) reported this Friday that a total of 144 people have died in 2025 in 136 accidents on the interurban road network of Catalonia. A figure that represents a 6% more deaths compared to the same period last year, when 136 people lost their lives in 123 fatal accidents. On the other hand, compared to 2019, the reference year for meeting objectives, the accident rate has been reduced by 18%, since in that year, 175 people died in 161 accidents.
Regarding serious injuries, the balance presented by the SCT indicates that this year there have been 861, a figure higher than the 807 in the same period last year. On the other hand, of the 144 fatalities, 114 were men and 30 were women, while of the seriously injured, the proportion is similar: 75% are men and 25% are women. Vulnerable groups (motorists, pedestrians and cyclists) represent 43% of the total deaths from traffic accidents. In this sense, 45 were motorcyclists, 12 pedestrians and 5 cyclists.
The rest of the deceased were traveling in a car (63), a heavy vehicle (10) and a van (8). Regarding the type of accidents, among the 134 fatal accidents there are 44 simple accidents, 37 head-on collisions, 20 side collisions, 13 collisions and 12 run-overs. According to the balance sheet, lThe roads that have accumulated the most deaths are the AP-7 with a total of 17, the N-II with 11, the C-58 with 9 and the A-2 with 8. However, the dispersion in the accident rate of the road network continues, since the C-12, the N-340 and the C-31 have recorded four deaths this year and the C-25, the C-32, the C-17, the GI-555 and the C-16, three respectively.
Young fatalities
Regarding the age of the fatalities, despite the fact that the group that registers the most deaths is that of 55 to 64 years, with 27 people dead – the same number as last year -, The increase in fatalities among younger population groups stands out.
In this sense, this year 51 people under 35 years of age have lost their lives on Catalan roads, a fact that represents 35% of the total deaths, that is, 12 more than last yearwhen there were 39. Specifically, 24 fatalities have been recorded in the age group of 15 to 24 years, 25 in the age group of 25 to 34 years, 18 in the age group of 35 to 44 years, 21 in the age group of 45 to 54 years, 27 in the age group of 55 to 64 years, 20 in the age group of 65 to 74 years and 2 in the age group of 0 to 14 years.
Accidents increase in Barcelona and Lleida
The balance also indicates that road accidents have increased in the provinces of Barcelona y Lleida. Specifically, in the first, 65 people have lost their lives, 10 more than in 2024, which represents an increase of 17% in fatal accidents in this district, despite the fact that there is a decrease of 20% compared to 2019. Of this total, 30 of the fatalities were motorcyclists. The regions with the most deaths are Vallès Occidental (12), Vallès Oriental (9), Baix Llobregat (8) and Maresme (8).
In the case of Lleida, in the last 12 months there have been 27 fatalities, one more than the previous year. El Segrià is the region of the province and of all of Catalonia with the most deaths, with a total of 15 fatalities due to traffic accidents. Instead, in Tarragona 30 deaths have been recorded, three less than last year, and a cumulative reduction of 25% compared to 2019. The regions with the most victims so far are Baix Camp (7) and Tarragonès (6), while AP-7 accumulates 11 deaths in this district. In Tarragona, they have also been registered 7 of the 10 heavy vehicle fatalities.
Finally, Girona has registered the same figure as the previous year, a total of 22 fatalities on interurban roads, data that compared to 2019 experienced a reduction of 18.5%. The Girona region with the most deaths is La Selva, with eight, followed by Alt Empordà, with seven.
