Prosecutors present evidence of sex trafficking and racketeering, while jury issues and testimony from a former employee add complexity to the case.
Prosecutors from the Southern District of New york are nearing the end of their case against Sean Combs in his sex trafficking and racketeering trial, presenting charts to the jury to consolidate their evidence.
Combs is charged with sex trafficking his ex-girlfriend Casandra “Cassie” Ventura and “Jane,” along with two counts of transportation for prostitution. Prosecutors used records to demonstrate how Combs allegedly used his businesses to fund flights for Ventura,Jane, and male escorts for sexual encounters.
Prosecutors linked documents, including photos, texts, bank statements, hotel records, and travel itineraries, to identify over a dozen instances where Combs allegedly paid for male escorts to fly across the country between 2009 and 2024.
Hotel invoices revealed thousands of dollars in damages following alleged encounters, with housekeeping photos showing messy suites, baby oil-soaked duvets, soiled sheets, and blood-stained linens.
This week also featured testimony from brendan Paul, a former employee referred to in civil lawsuits as Combs’ alleged drug “mule.” Paul, 26, was arrested for cocaine possession during the March 2024 raids on Combs’ properties. Paul denied the “mule” descriptor, stating it was his mistake the drugs were found in his luggage and that he acted out of “loyalty” by not telling police the drugs were not his.
Paul admitted to purchasing and delivering drugs to Combs between five and 10 times during his 18-month employment, considering it “personal use.” He stated he paid between $300 and $500 for drugs like ecstasy, cocaine, ketamine, and tusi. He also helped restock Combs’ marijuana supply every other month, paying $4,200 for two strains.
Paul’s testimony supported the prosecutors’ charge of a racketeering conspiracy against Combs, who has pleaded not guilty to five felony charges. Combs is accused of using his empire as a criminal enterprise, maintaining a stash of illicit substances, and instructing staff to commit bribery, arson, and kidnapping.
Jury Issues
“Somebody is lying,” Subramanian said after questioning both sides if the leak came from their camps.
After a debate over a juror’s conflicting answers about his residence, U.S.District Judge Arun Subramanian dismissed the Department of Corrections employee on Monday.
“Even if this juror had an excuse or explanation for the inconsistencies in the record, that woudl be yet another set of shifting answers on basic questions about the juror’s residence,” Subramanian stated. “This would only heighten the specter that the juror’s trying to shade answers in an effort to remain on the jury. Simply put, there’s nothing the juror could say at this point that would put the genie back in the bottle and repair the damage to his credibility.”
A separate issue involving another juror led to a sealed courtroom discussion. Details of the meeting were leaked to a media outlet, prompting a warning from the judge. “Somebody is lying,” Subramanian said, adding that further violations could result in sanctions.
Court was canceled on Wednesday due to a juror experiencing vertigo.
