Chilean Greenhouse Showcases Tropical Beauty in a Symphony of Glass
Chilean architecture studio Max Núñez Arquitectos has unveiled a stunning greenhouse showcasing lush tropical greenery. Affectionately nicknamed "Casa de Vidrio," which translates to "Glass House," this unique architectural marvel merges seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.
A Design Inspired by Nature
Located in a private garden, Casa de Vidrio isn’t just a space for plants; it’s a celebration of their beauty and resilience. Studio founder Max Núñez crafted the design with a keen eye for creating a harmonious blend between nature and modern architecture.
The greenhouse’s star feature is its double vaulted ceiling, constructed entirely from glass bricks. This innovative design allows ample sunlight to penetrate the structure while gently diffusing it, creating a warm and inviting environment for the thriving tropical plants.
Unveiling a World Below
Adding an element of intrigue, the plants themselves aren’t solely visible from above. Núñez cleverly employed a lower elevation for the plant life, accessed by a series of staircases that lead down from a concrete-and-steel platform encircling the interior. This ingenious design not only allows visitors to get up close and personal with the diverse flora but also creates a unique visual experience, showcasing the vertical growth of the plants while emphasizing their contrast against the sky.
Engineering Resilience in a Changing Climate
Chile’s seismic activity posed a unique challenge for the team. To ensure the structural integrity of the vaulted ceilings, extra supports were integrated throughout the design, particularly where the vaults converge and at the perimeter. Additionally, heating elements were strategically placed for warmth during the colder winter months.
Showcasing a Fragile World
The entire exterior is clad in extra-translucent glass, transforming Casa de Vidrio into a giant window showcasing the vibrant inner world to the outside. This allows the surrounding landscape to become part of the experience, blurring the lines between nature and architecture.
