Cartes Lawyer Denies Ostfield’s Accusations

by Archynetys Economy Desk

Lawyer Pedro Ovelar, representative of former President Horacio Cartes, forcefully rejected the statements made by the former United States ambassador to Paraguay, Marc Ostfield, in local media and in radio interviews.

According to Ovelar, Ostfield would have violated international agreements and treaties by directly interfering in the internal affairs of the Colorado Party and in Paraguayan national politics. The lawyer even recalled a publication in the Argentina newspaper Clarín that denounced the diplomat’s alleged intervention in the country’s internal affairs.

He questioned Ostfield’s claims about confidential meetings with Paraguayan authorities and Cartes’ alleged ties to terrorist groups. “They are absolutely false accusations. In March 2025, Horacio Cartes was invited as a speaker by the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, to an international conference against anti-Semitism in Jerusalem,” he stated.

The lawyer also pointed out that the complaints that Ostfield would have used as a basis come from investigations and processes promoted during the government of Mario Abdo Benítez and that sought to politically affect Cartes and his environment. According to Ovelar, the Public Ministry dismissed all accusations against him, while former officials of the previous government face proceedings for punishable acts related to these complaints.

Ovelar highlighted that, through his legal advisors, Cartes resorted to US authorities to demonstrate the falsehood of the accusations, achieving the lifting of all the sanctions that affected him.
