Carris President Resigns: Latest News

In a note to the media, the Lisbon City Council stated that Carlos Moedas met with the president of the Board of Directors of Carris and that, at that meeting, “his resignation from the position was presented” of the company president.

The resignation is “extendable to all remaining members of the Board of Directors” of Carris, the same note adds.

The Mayor of Lisbon understands and accepts the reasons presentedconsidering the appointment of a new Administration to be essential, which will be presented in due course, for a new mandate”.

Carlos Moedas also highlights “the professional and courageous way in which, in the toughest moment of his mandate, Following the tragic accident at the Elevador da Glória, the current Board of Directors defended the company’s interests and, despite having made the position available from the outset, they agreed to remain in office”, states the note.

According to the Chamber of the capital of Lisbon, the current administration of Carris will guarantee management, within legal deadlines and limits, until the selection of a new president and Board of Directors of the company.

The mayor also wanted to reinforce the “concern of wanting to reestablish as quickly as possible the total trust and credibility of a fundamental company for the city of Lisbon”.

The resignation comes after, on Monday, the conclusions of the preliminary report were known of the Aircraft Accident Prevention and Investigation Office and Railway Accidents (GPIAAF) regarding the tragedy with the Glória elevator.

The accident took place on September 3 and caused 16 deaths and two dozen injuries, including Portuguese and foreigners of various nationalities.

According to the report, the cable that joined the two cabins of the Glória elevator and that gave way at its point of attachment to the carriage that derailed did not respect Carris specifications, nor was it certified for use in transporting people.
