A recent case from a report by Live Science highlights the potential dangers of adopting an extreme diet such as the carnivore diet. A 40-year-old man followed this lifestyle for eight months and developed yellow lumps on his hands and feet.

The man’s diet was high in fat, incorporating large quantities of cheese, butter sticks, and fatty ingredients added to his daily hamburger consumption.

The Nature of the Yellow Lumps

The lumps on his skin are classified as Xanthelasma, a condition where small, harmless, yellow deposits of cholesterol accumulate under the skin. These deposits can be soft, chalky, or semi-solid and commonly appear on the hands, feet, elbows, joints, tendons, and knees.

Doctors discovered that the man’s total cholesterol levels soared to more than 1,000 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL), nearly four times his usual levels of 210 to 300 mg/dL.

While Xanthelasma itself is not a serious condition, the build-up of oil and cholesterol in this way can indicate underlying health risks that, if left unchecked, could lead to more severe health issues in the future.

The example of this man reminds us that any diet, no matter how ‘trendy’, should always be approached with caution. It is prudent to maintain a balanced, well-rounded diet that provides all necessary nutrients for the human body.
