It was quite clear from the statements of both prime ministers that they have chosen to overlook the long shadow of the Trudeau-era diplomatic tensions.

With fast-moving geopolitical shifts at the moment, it makes sense for powers like Canada and India to work together. As Carney said earlier, “if you are not at the table, you are on the menu”.

This pragmatism is clear from the deals the two countries announced today.

Let’s look at the uranium deal – India’s energy needs are going to double by 2050 and it’s betting big on nuclear power to fulfil that demand. But it needs a steady supply of uranium and that’s where Canada has stepped in by promising a steady supply.

For Ottawa, the deal gives it crucial business worth billions of dollars and also some much-needed goodwill in India.
