Car-Free Cities: 50 Locations Today

by Archynetys Economy Desk

The car -free Sunday is the traditional highlight of the Week of Mobility that this year the slogan ‘File, who has time for that now?’ uses. In some places such as Hasselt, the car was already banned last weekend, some did that on Saturday. You can find a nice overview here.

Brussels is even “the largest car -free zone in Europe,” said Brussels Mobility Regional Administration. In the capital, all streets are car -free from 9.30 am to 7 pm. “Mobility for everyone” is central to the day with a lot of activities. The buses, trams and subways of STIB drive all day for free and the service is strengthened. In other cities, only the center is often car -free.

At the NMBS there is today with the special ‘Mobility Ticket‘ a out-and-back ticket between two stations of your choice. The ticket in second class costs 8 euros. De Lijn offers an affordable day ticket for families throughout the Week of Mobility. For 12 euros, up to 5 family members and friends can use the buses and trams for 24 hours.

An overview of all activities can be found on the website www.weekvandemobility.be. The Week of Mobility – officially from 16 to 22 September – has been around since 1996 and is also organized elsewhere in Europe.

“The average car agent spends more than forty hours a year on the traffic jam,” is it on the website of the campaign. That should not be the case today.
