Cañete: Antihuén Brothers – Life for Police Triple Homicide

Felipe, Tomás and Jefferson Antihuén Santi were sentenced to qualified life imprisonment, brothers who on March 3 were found guilty of the triple homicide of police officers in Cañete, an event that occurred in 2024 and that shocked the country.

The sentence was read this Thursday afternoon in the Oral Court of Cañete, in a hearing that began electronically after 3:00 p.m.

It should be remembered that there were six weeks of hearings in this trial on the events that occurred during the night of April 26 and early morning of the 27th of the same month in 2024, when officials Sergio Arévalo, Carlos Cisternas and Misael Vidal controlled compliance with a precautionary measure in a rural home in the commune of Cañete.

According to the Library of National Congress, qualified life imprisonment is an indefinite custodial sentence, in which the convicted person can only apply for benefits such as parole once 40 effective years of imprisonment have been completed.

Likewise, it is important to highlight that the Antihuén Santi brothers were convicted as perpetrators of the murders, while Nicolás Rivas Paillao was convicted as a contributing author.

According to what was read during the hearing, the sentences were as follows:

1.- is acquitted the Antihuen Santi brothers from the accusation as perpetrators of the consummated crime of transferring human remains.

2.- It is sentenced the Antihuen Santi brothers to 10 years and 1 day in prison for the crime of robbery with violence.

3.- It is sentenced Nicolás Rivas Paillao to 5 years and 1 day in prison for the crime of collaborating in robbery with violence.

4.- It is sentenced Antihue Santi brothers to life imprisonment for murder against police officers.

5.- It is sentenced Nicolás Rivas Paillao to 17 years and 1 day in prison as a contributing author of the homicide of police officers.

6.- It is sentenced the Antihuen Santi brothers to 5 years in prison as perpetrators of the crime of arson.

7.- It is sentenced Felipe Anithuen Santi 3 years and 1 day in prison for illegal possession of a firearm.

8.- It is sentenced Jefferson Antihuen Santi to 7 years and 1 day in prison for 2 crimes of illegal possession of a firearm.

9.- It is sentenced Tomás Antihuén Santi to 10 years in prison for the crime of illegal possession of a firearm.

10.- It is sentenced Jefferson Antihuen Santi to 5 years and 1 day in prison for the crime of robbery with intimidation.

11.- It is sentenced Jefferson Antihuen Santi to 5 years and 1 day in prison for the crime of frustrated simple homicide committed in Contulmo on March 29, 2023.

12.- It is sentenced Jefferson Antihuen Santi to 4 years in prison for receiving a motor vehicle committed in Contulmo on March 29, 2023.

13.- It is sentenced Tomás Antihuen Santi to 61 days in jail for the crime of attack against authority and 540 days of minor confinement for the crime of attack against authority.

Furthermore, the Public Ministry reported that the sentences imposed on those convicted must be served with effective prison, from the most serious to the least serious.

Prosecutor’s Office of La Araucanía for sentence

The prosecutor in charge of the investigation, Roberto Garrido, referred to the sentence obtained. “As we maintained the day the damning verdict in this case was announced, nothing that that can occur will repair the pain that the victims feel.”

Regarding the years in prison, “the sum of the sentences is very important. I insist, there are not only qualified life imprisonment sentences for three of the authors; for the fourth participant There are penalties that exceed 20 years of deprivation of liberty. All of them, of course.they are effectively enforceable penalties.”

“We consider that this sentence also satisfies the claims of the Prosecutor’s Office, and today we have to prepare for a new stage because it is evident that the defenses are going to appeal against this decision“, he concluded.
