Cancer Support: Single Mom Receives Car from Lone Warrior Foundation

In the midst of her battle with ovarian cancer, Lakeisha Glaspie says God answered her prayers delivering hope on four wheels from the Lone Warrior Foundation.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Lakeisha Glaspie, who was diagnosed with Stage 3 ovarian cancer in February, has already endured six rounds of chemotherapy. On top of treatment, she’s been without a car, making everything in her life from doctor appointments to seeing her children far more difficult. That changed Friday when the Lone Warrior Foundation blessed her with a brand-new car.

“I know between the surgery coming up and having no car and the challenges that come along with it, this is from all of us because we love you and this is what Lone Warrior is all about, to make a difference for people like you to help you along your journey because it’s hard enough to be a single mom, but it’s even harder to have cancer on top of it,” Rob Chumbook said.

Chumbook, a cancer survivor himself, knows the overwhelming reality of fighting for your life while being a single parent. He created the Lone Warrior Foundation to give single parents battling cancer community, hope and financial support.

Lakeisha’s new car, a Hyundai Kona, wasn’t just donated. It was raffled off at the Lone Warrior Foundation’s gala, and the winner chose to give it away.

“I hope it changes your life for the better. That is what we are all about. Save one life, change one life; that is what our motto is,” Chumbook said.

Lakeisha says she had driven her previous car for 17 years before it broke down. The last two months without transportation have been difficult.

“And then to be gifted something like this,” she said. “It’s life-changing. I know I’ll make it to treatment…and of course, being able to get my son who was concerned we were going to miss visits.”

The new car couldn’t have come at a better time. She says her mother is in hospice care.

“Lakeisha’s mom is at the end of the road, unfortunately. And they don’t know how long she’s going to live, and this car is going to allow her to drive to New York to see her mom before she passes,” Chumbook said,  “So, there’s a beautiful silver lining to this gift.”

Lakeisha says it’s answer to prayer.

“When you get a cancer diagnosis, it almost seems that everything that can go wrong will go wrong. And it’s been a challenge for me to just hang in there, to keep praying, to keep fighting, to reach out for help. A lot of people, myself included, just don’t want to reach out for help, but it’s so important to reach out for help because there are people wonderful people and organizations like the Lone Warrior Foundation just willing to help you,” she said. “I know it was God answering some prayers.”

If you’re a single parent battling cancer and need help, you can apply for financial assistance on The Lone Warrior Foundation’s website. The organization is also seeking volunteers and donors.
