On Wednesday evening, Halloween night in Vancouver, a ghastly sequence of events unfolded as families took part in trick-or-treating. Daniel Martin, a father of three, was with his children at the Vancouver Mall when a terrifying encounter with an indiscriminate shooter left him gravely injured.

Daniel Martin and his children were casually enjoying their night of trick-or-treating until the sudden ghastly reality struck them. "After about 40 minutes of trick-or-treating, we went to the food court. After having a single bite of the burrito, I heard like four pops, and in my head, I’m like, that can’t be a gun,” said Daniel Martin. As panic stole over the crowd, Martin quickly acted to protect his five-year-old child. "I feel something hit my foot, and it was immediate. This is a gun. I was sitting next to my five-year-old, so I just grabbed her and dove behind a dumpster,” he recalled. The shooter was wearing a menacing Halloween mask, adding to the already chilling atmosphere.

Brandon Leyrer, escorted the three-year-old to safety before returning to discover his girlfriend, also the children’s mother, had been injured. "I’d Checking on my girlfriend, she put me down on the ground and told me that I was hit in my ribs," added Leyrer. The critical moments of the couple seeing each other, with the latter being down, reflected the fight for their lives.
The Frontline First Aid Heroes
Two selfless strangers stepped in to help. One individual promptly came over, undeterred the situation and provided aid. Leyrer noted, "He came over, took a shirt off and helped hold compression down on my gunshot wound on my ribs."
Daniel Martin echoed the appreciation, "I don’t know who gave me their belt to use as a tourniquet, but whoever it was, thank you for that."
