Seniors Chris Calix and Isaac Garcia formed a scoring connection not once, but twice on Wednesday to power Brenham to a district win.
Garcia scored two goals on Calix assists to power Brenham to a 2-1 victory over Montgomery at Cub Stadium.
“(We) played our best game once again,” Brenham coach Craig Boggan told The Banner-Press in a statement. “(I am) so proud of the guys tonight.”
Brenham (4-6, 1-1 district) broke a five-match winless streak against the Bears and a three-match losing streak for the season.
Montgomery (5-4-1, 1-1-1) had not allowed multiple goals against the Cubs since its last loss to Brenham on Feb. 7, 2023.
Calix found Garcia from the left wing two minutes into the match with Garcia heading toward the end line. Garcia made a crafty move inside to set himself up for a shot at goal, which he took confidently for a 1-0 lead.
Montgomery tied the match five minutes later on a long through ball that went beyond Brenham’s back line, but Calix and Garcia linked up again with six minutes left in the half. On what Boggan called “an almost exact same play” to the first goal, Garcia put the Cubs ahead for good after a good pass from Calix.
Boggan said the second half “was a scramble for both sides,” but Brenham held firm to clinch the victory.
Brenham will try to build a two-match district win streak for the first time since 2018 at 7:30 p.m. Friday when it travels to Huntsville. The Cubs also seek their third consecutive win over the Hornets after sweeping Huntsville last season.
