What you should know

  • The measure asks the state’s 23 million registered voters about whether to authorize temporary changes to congressional district maps approved by state lawmakers.
  • Congressional district maps are generally redrawn every ten years, after each census, by an independent redistricting commission approved by voters in California.
  • Proposition 50 is a response pushed by Governor Gavin Newsom and Democrats to redistricting in Texas, which arose at the behest of President Trump in an attempt to gain Republican seats in the US House of Representatives.
  • If passed, Proposition 50 could allow up to five of the 435 seats in the House of Representatives to go to Democrats.
  • Voting centers in California will be open this Tuesday, from 7 am to 8 pm. You will be able to vote, register as a conditional voter and deliver mail-in ballots.

Voters will decide on the redistricting measure pushed by Governor Newsom in response to the new electoral map in Texas.
