Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal collision that occurred yesterday, April 15th, on the Egnatia Odos highway. The incident involved a truck, driven by a 38-year-old Ukrainian national and owned by a Bulgarian company, which collided with a taxi point, resulting in multiple casualties.

The accident took place amidst conditions of dense fog, a known hazard on this stretch of road. Preliminary reports suggest the truck was traveling at a considerable speed when it struck a safety fence before careening into the central dividing line. The impact involved two passenger vehicles and a roadside structure.

Tragically, two occupants of one of the vehicles, identified as a Greek emigrant couple in their 70s who resided in Switzerland and were visiting Greece for the Easter holidays, were killed in the collision. They reportedly died from the impact and subsequent fire.

Driver’s Account and Toxicology Results

Following the accident, the truck driver underwent toxicological testing, which revealed no traces of alcohol in his system. According too ERT, the driver reportedly told authorities, I have not seen, I have not understood anything. He is expected to appear before a prosecutor today as the investigation continues.

Injuries and Aftermath

In addition to the fatalities, four individuals sustained injuries. Among the injured are the 34-year-old driver of one of the cars involved and a 26-year-old employee at the road collection point,who suffered minor head abrasions. A woman who was near the traffic police officers’ station also sustained injuries. All injured parties are receiving medical treatment.

The woman stated that she also did not understand what had happened.
