Bugs, AI & Tech’s Turning Points | Future Insights

Between problems with OneDrive, the end of telephone activation, eliminated functions and Copilot becoming increasingly central, Microsoft starts 2026 with choices that redesign Windows and deeply divide users.

The beginning of 2026 opens with a series of significant changes for the universe Microsoftbetween strategic decisions and technical problems that are causing discussions among Windows users. From the controversial management of OneDrive to the disposal of historical functions, passing through new integrations based on artificial intelligence, the Redmond giant seems intent on redefining its ecosystem, even at the cost of generating discontent and questions about the future of the user experience.

The most delicate issue undoubtedly concerns OneDrive, protagonist of reports increasingly numerous by users who report the disappearance of their own file. The problem arises from the automatic activation of the backup function, which moves Desktop, Documents and Images to the cloud without really clear consent. In many cases the process occurs in silent way, without explicit warnings, and the user only notices it when the available space runs out or when he tries to deactivate the service. It is precisely in this phase that the most critical situation can occur: removing files from the cloud involves theirs deletion also from the local computerwith no real possibility of recovery. A dynamic that has sparked a heated online debate and raised questions about the real protection of the user’s autonomy and their personal data. The fact that Microsoft presents this behavior as a security measure has not convinced many observers, who speak of a system that is not very transparent and potentially dangerous, especially for those who are not particularly expert.

Alongside this case, Microsoft has confirmed a historic but perhaps inevitable change: the end of Windows activation via telephone. The service, active for decades, was officially decommissioned on December 3, 2025, although many users only noticed it weeks later, finding themselves faced with a recorded message inviting them to proceed via the internet. This is a choice that symbolically marks the end of an era, one in which connectivity was not a given and operating systems had to offer completely offline alternatives. Today, Windows 11 can still be activated without a Microsoft account by simply entering the product key, while offline activation remains possible only through a more complex procedure that requires a second device connected to the network. For older versions of the operating system, however, the official possibilities are drastically reduced, making activation impossible for those using isolated or legacy machines.

The third novelty concerns Microsoft Wordwhich he prepares to say goodbye to direct integration with Send to Kindle. Starting February 9, 2026, the feature will be removed from Word on Windows, macOS and the web version. Introduced in 2023 thanks to a collaboration with Amazon, it allowed you to send documents directly to Kindle devices, either as a fixed layout file or as an adaptable ebook. Even though it was a niche function, it was particularly appreciated by those who also used e-readers in professional or study settings. Microsoft did not provide in-depth explanations, but the decision seems to be part of a broader strategy to simplify the software offering, with the elimination of less used integrations.

Finally, Microsoft is reportedly experimenting with one new Copilot integration directly within Windows 11 File Explorera choice that could make the assistant even more present – and for some users more inconvenient – in the daily experience of the operating system. In recent builds distributed to Windows Insiders, a “ghost” button has appeared in the Explorer navigation bar, visible only by hovering the mouse over an empty area, which would hide functions related to AI. The strings found in the system files suggest the possibility of starting a contextual chat with Copilot based on the selected files, opening a sidebar or a floating window without leaving the explorer. The goal it would be to overcome the current limited integration, which forces you to switch between the dedicated app, interrupting the workflow, but the risk is that of burdening an area of the system that many users would like to keep essential. Even if the function is still inactive and may never reach the final version, the tests confirm the direction taken by Microsoft: bringing artificial intelligence more and more to the center of Windows 11, with the result of further dividing opinion between those who see a potential increase in productivity and those who fear an interface that is increasingly less sober and controllable.
