When Jiří Murtinger proposed a plan to financially support the restoration of Brno’s folk costumes through the city’s participatory budget, the response was overwhelming.

Initially, the city allocated four million to seven city districts for costume restoration, but the amount was quickly increased to six million. Even this may not be sufficient. “We found that even 23 city districts were interested in the restoration of their folk costumes. we were surprised at how much traditions in young people were rooted,” said Brno councilor petr Bořecký (KDU-ČSL).

One dedicated individual embarked on a mission to locate the original folk garment. Ethnographers and examples of Medlánky folk costumes are already documented.Historical records and eyewitness accounts proved invaluable in this endeavor. While up to one hundred costumed individuals may gather in the city, only six pairs of original costumes remain. Thanks to city support, the number coudl double within a year. “The interest in folklore is huge in our country. It is all managed by Chasa, especially a bunch of dozens of people aged 18 to 25 people,” said Mayor Michal Marek (Medlánky citizens).

He mentioned the local part of Bohuslavice, where Chasa has also recently updated and modified costumes based on historical sources, noting that the kyjov costumes are already considered excellent.
