Britain’s Sodium-Ion Battery Breakthrough | Europe’s First

by Archynetys News Desk

London can lead the way in safe and reliable alternatives to lead-acid and lithium batteries.

There has been a breakthrough in battery manufacturing in Wales. Here they created the first product entirely from British and European materials.

Ess news writes that a research team from Batri and Swansea University have created a new cylindrical sodium-ion battery using materials made in the UK, which is believed to be the first of its kind.

The 18650 sodium-ion battery combines chemistries developed by British energy storage company Batri and Swansea University, including composite carbon derived from Welsh coal.

Batri said the battery demonstration marks the start of a wider development program and the company is already producing more batteries as it ramps up materials production and its own battery assembly capacity in Wales. Meanwhile, Batri is partnering with AceOn Group to integrate UK sodium-ion batteries into replacement battery packs and custom energy systems.

“Batri’s breakthrough in manufacturing 18650 cells in the UK, backed by world-class materials science in Swansea, shows that the UK can lead the way in safe and reliable alternatives to entry-level lead-acid and lithium batteries,” said AceOn Group CEO Mark Thompson.

Earlier, UNIAN wrote that in Germany they created a new generation lithium-free battery that works faster than others.
