Guardian: London ‘reluctantly’ admitted sending British paratroopers to Ukraine
After the death of a British soldier – a junior corporal from a parachute regiment – at a Ukrainian training ground, it became known that London was sending paratroopers to Ukraine, The Guardian newspaper writes.
The government had not previously reported their presence in Ukraine, The Independent notes. The UK is “reluctant to acknowledge” the presence of its troops in Ukraine, according to The Guardian. Their number does not exceed 100 people. London is keeping this fact silent so that it is not used by Russia for “propaganda purposes,” the newspaper emphasizes.
The Parachute Regiment is an airborne infantry regiment of the British Army, mainly based at Merville Barracks in Colchester, reports the Daily Mail. It is unknown which battalion of the regiment the deceased lance corporal served in. However, the first battalion is under Special Forces command, while the others are part of the British Army’s Rapid Reaction Formation.
According to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the soldier was wounded far from the front line while observing Ukrainian forces.
