Renée Zellweger Returns as Bridget Jones for Valentine’s Day
With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, audiences are getting a nostalgic treat as Renée Zellweger returns to the big screen to reprise her role as Bridget Jones in the highly anticipated fourth installment of the comedy series, “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy.” The film’s debut in Irish cinemas on Thursday was met with excitement and anticipation from both longtime fans and newcomers alike.
Eager Fans Fill Cinemas
Terri Deegan from Pearse Street in Dublin and her daughter were among the eager fans who showed up at the Savoy Cinema on O’Connell Street at lunchtime on the opening day. For Deegan, the series holds special memories shared with her family.
“We went to all the other Bridget Jones movies with my mother and sister, but my Mam passed away last year, so my sister won’t go,” Deegan explained. “So me and the daughter said come on, we’ll go, and my Mam’s beside us.”
Recalling their tradition of cinema trips, Deegan continued, “We used to go to the one out in Coolock because my Mam’s from there. So that’s where we used to go and have our goodies and all. We’d get a lift home all, it’d be great.”
Celebrating with a Film
What excites Deegan about the latest adventure from Bridget Jones? “Renée Zellweger hasn’t been on the screen in a while, and it looks funny. There’s more movement and music in it, something I’m looking forward to,” she said enthusiastically.
Angelique Jenkins, visiting from Australia, was in the Savoy on her own for a cinema treat. Jenkins is a fan of Zellweger’s character. “I love her as an actress and the story, themes, everything. She’s wild and free and quirky, just like how I love being a woman,” Jenkins laughed.
Jenkins had just arrived in Ireland for a short three-day visit. “I just came for three days, I’m here from the UK,” she said. “It’s my first time in Ireland, so I decided to come see the movie today.”
Palentines and Birthdays
Kay Lynam and her friends are celebrating their birthdays with a “Palentine’s” day out, marking their third birthdays together. The trio decided a trip to the Savoy to see the newest Bridget Jones film would be perfect.
“It’s because we’re out for lunch and it’s Valentine’s tomorrow and the movie is starting today that we decided we’d come and see it,” Lynam said. “We’ve been told inside to bring tissues, that we’ll be crying and laughing from time to time. We don’t know yet so we’ll go in and see.”
Lynam and her friends are not the only ones celebrating birthdays with Bridget Jones. Rhiannon and Ed Walshe are visiting Dublin from Mayo. “It was my birthday yesterday, so we’re here for that and we were just trying to find something to do and it was kind of the only film that we felt like seeing,” Rhiannon said.
“So is this an early Valentine’s date?” Lynam asked. “We don’t really do Valentine’s Day,” the couple replied. “We last saw Barbie in the cinema.”
Cinema Club Night Out
Over at Odeon’s Point Square cinema, Andrea Dodd and Nora Condon have already secured their tickets for a screening next week. “We have a cinema club in our workplace, and we try to come to the local cinema if we can,” Dodd explained. “Bridget Jones was the only film that was on at a time that suits.”
“It’s something nice and enjoyable to see,” Condon added. “It’ll be relaxing. It won’t upset anybody, it won’t be hard to watch or anything. So just a relaxing evening ahead with a group of friends.”
Box Office Expectations
With pre-sales for the movie on track to break box office records, it looks like planning ahead is advisable for those looking to catch the film. Fans, old and new, have eagerly embraced the return of Bridget Jones, ensuring that the fourth installment of the beloved comedy series will be a hit in cinemas nationwide.
Whether it’s a birthday treat, a Valentine’s celebration, or simply a chance to revisit a classic, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy is set to bring smiles to many faces.
